What is an Au Pair?
Being an Au Pair is a great way to experience living in Canada, while earning some pocket money at the same time. An Au Pair is a young person, usually between the ages of 18 and 29, who travels abroad to live with a host family. As a participant in the Au Pair program, you will be placed with a Canadian family, either in Toronto, or other metropolitan areas. You will help take care of your host family’s children, as well as assist with some household chores.
All Au Pairs must be 18 years of age and above, have past childcare experience such as babysitting &/or tutoring, possess a mature attitude, and obtain a Working Holiday visa to Canada.
You will have the rare opportunity to experience just what it is like to live with a Canadian family.
The word “au pair” comes from the French term, meaning “on a par” or “equal to”. This means that that the relationship is intended to be one of equals: the au pair should be treated like a member of the family. As an Au Pair, you will be expected to interact with your “family” in English, so you can expect to feel more comfortable with the language over time.
